AA limited (trading as AA) is a British motoring association, founded in 1905. It originated as a charitable association known as ‘The Automobile Association’ which helped motorists avoid police speed traps as a response to the severe penalties brought on by the Motor Car Act of 1903.
By 1906, the AA had assembled a formidable amount of roadside danger and warning signs while bearing the responsibility of the management of road signage until the local authorities took over in the early 1930s.
The AA is one of the UK’s most well-known breakdown providers alongside RAC and Eversure Breakdown. They've been helping motorists at the roadside by working with and producing the latest technology to ensure they get their members back on the road utilising their fleet of around 2,700 recovery vehicles and unlimited callouts to ensure that members. Alongside over 7,000 employees nationwide and a dedicated UK-based call centre for members.
What is AA breakdown cover?
AA breakdown covers roadside assistance for one vehicle that breaks down more than a quarter mile from your home address with unlimited callout for the duration of your membership, which is typically for a minimum of 12-months at a time. If the vehicle can’t be repaired at roadside, AA will recover it and transport it to a local repairer. AA breakdown cover may also include;

Does AA breakdown cover start immediately?
Your cover will start on the date you choose. However, if you pick today’s date, your cover will start in 24 hours’ time.
Note: You can only claim on Parts & Garage Cover for breakdowns that happen after the first 14 days of your cover.

What can the AA fix at the roadside?
The AA can fix some issues at roadside, this may include but not limited to:
- Flat batteries – a breakdown mechanic can jump-start your battery to get your engine going again.
- Flat tyres – remove the old tyre and fit a new one.
- Anything more serious, in terms of engine problems, you will typically be recovered to a garage for repairs.
